Due to our ux design knowledge and programming skills of Dominik and Marzi, we supported BBDO and Cloud Visual Brand Entertainment in developing the largest bubble gum machine of the world. Together, the agencies created the new mind opener campaign FOR smart. #WhatAreYouFOR

The biggest thing we were focusing on was using Node as an API and Angular as the frontend. Making webbased gameing, database and hardware work together was a major challenge.

It was great fun and a pleasure to work with you.
Many thanks to Sandra, Andreas and Jürgen from Cloud.

Often the mobile experience for a web application or site is created after the desktop version is released.
With a mobile first viewpoint, we start by loading the absolute bare essentials on the smaller platforms. This leads to a snappier experience that avoids unnecessary lag. The additional resources are loaded strictly on an as-neeeded basis to platforms that can handle them well.

“I think it’s now the joint project of all of us to make mobile the answer to pretty much everything”. Eric Schmidt

Here are 3 reasons why web applications should be designed for mobile first:

1. Mobile is fast-growing!
- Heavy mobile data users are projected to triple to one billion by 2013. (source)
– Mobile internet adoption has outpaced desktop internet adoption by eight times. (source)
– Smartphone sales will surpass worldwide PC sales by the end of 2011 . (source)
– Over half of Android and iPhone users spend more than 30 minutes per day using mobile applications. (source)

2. Mobile forces to focus!
when a team designs mobile first, the end result is an experience focused on the key tasks users want to accomplish without the extraneous detours and general interface debris that litter today’s desktop-accessed Web sites. That’s good user experience and good for business.

3. Mobile extends your capabilities!
Location information, multi-touch, device positioning, user generated content and more – Mobile application platforms are introducing more exciting capabilities

The graph depicts the relative effort spent on the various competences. From this data a very clear trend emerges: only 20% of the effort is spent on actually programming (coding) the system, while the preceding phases (requirements engineering and design) and evaluation each consume about 45% of the total effort.

Concept: Requirements 10% + Specification 10%
Design: UI & UX Design 15%
Coding: Fontend & Backend 20%
Implementation: Evaluation & Project Management 45%

Source: Software Engineering: Principles and Practice, Hans van Vliet, Wiley, 2007

Good evaluation is at least as difficult as good design. Different studies indicate that 30 – 85 errors per 1000 lines of source code are made. These figures seem not to improve over time. During evaluation, quite a few errors will be found and subsequently fixed – this increase costs and time!

Source: Software Engineering: Principles and Practice, Hans van Vliet, Wiley, 2007

Evaluation is often taken to mean executing a program to see whether it produces the correct output for a given input. This involves testing at the end of the process, the application or system itself. As a consequence, the evaluation activity often does not get the attention it deserves. By the time the system has been designed and coded, we are often pressed for time, which does not encourage thorough evaluation.

Good concept papers (detailed wireframes and specifications) helps to decrease the risk of error accumulation by testing the idea in a very early stage of the process. It helps to save time and money!
